Valentines day is all about love, but I am not too interested in hearts and flowers. So, I decided to base our Valentine art on sharing kindness and love. After discussing Robert Indiana's LOVE sculpture in New York, the students talked about what it means to love someone. Words like helping, sharing, caring, friendship, and family were tossed around. Its nice to hear so many young people who have the right idea. Following our discussion the students created an artwork for someone that they feel fit their description of love. This week students are working on the Art Element of Shape. K-2 are making Pumpkin Head characters. We are using Organic Shapes to draw Realistic pumpkins. We are then adding bodies and Expressions to our pumpkins. The artwork is being colored with Watercolor Payons and then painted over with water. They are super fun! 3-5 are working on organic shapes as well as they create character skeletons. This is a simple but fun project that allows students to explore anatomy in addition to the art element SHAPE. We are also developing hand and skull X-rays... Pastel Scenery... And origami eyes! As you may have guessed, I am a big fan of Halloween. I hope these scary shapes add a little fun to your holiday.
These past few weeks have been very productive! Kindergarten through second grade have been discussing emotion and expression. After reading My Many Colored Days by Dr. Seuss, we discussed how color and images can represent feelings. We then created "Many Colored Monster" books. The students selected colors that represented different emotions. We practiced writing the feeling, discussed the feeling, and drew fun monsters that represented that feeling. Third through fifth grade have been working on mandalas. After exploring some information on the history of mandala making. We spent some time taking journeys into our imaginations. The students created their own safe spaces and used those locations as inspiration for their personal mandalas. You can check out a mandala prezi on the links page. Photos of the mandalas are posted in the student gallery.
The first two weeks of art class are being spent going over introductions, classroom expectations, and of course, working on some important art skills. The 3rd-5th grade classes are working on creating unique FONTS. We are exploring bubble letters, block letters, spacing, and using shadows/ perspective. The students are doing so well with this! Check out the 'Art Links' page for a free online graffiti site! The 1st and 2nd graders are working on overlapping letters to create interesting shapes. Their abstract artworks are being filled in with solid colors and PATTERNS. The Kindergarten is starting with LINE work. They are practicing drawing, tracing, and naming a variety of lines. They are finishing by discussing their favorite type of line, tracing it with glue, and helping it stand out with glitter. You can see more examples in the 'Student Gallery'!
